La obra transcurre en un barrio de Barcelona, en la trastienda de un comercio de venta directa de huevos. En esta tienda trabaja Maru, madre de Paula. Estas dos mujeres vinieron desde Madrid hace un año y medio para cuidar de Carmen, tras enterarse de que la enfermedad pulmonar de esta había avanzado. Alquilaron el local e iniciaron una nueva vida. Paula quiere irse de viaje de fin de curso, pero Maru no le da permiso. Enfadada por la falta de confianza de su madre, Paula coloca en la trastienda el pedido de huevos y un destello luminoso capta su atención. La joven encuentra un huevo con escamas de colores, diferente al resto... Maru y Carmen entran en la trastienda y se percatan del comportamiento extraño de Paula. En ese momento, una manifestación por la Independencia de Cataluña adquiere tintes bélicos y las tres mujeres tienen que permanecer encerradas en el local.
