Tres hermanas emigrantes Olga, Marta e Irene, llegan a una aldea para emprender una nueva vida, pero el chófer que tenía que recogerlas no aparece. Tampoco los habitantes parecen recibirles de buen modo y se comportan de manera inexplicable. Solo Irene, que echa de menos su país, conecta con un personaje misterioso, Antón. Marta, abandonada por su novio, desea ser madre y buscará en Juan el futuro padre de su hijo. Olga, la hermana mayor, se ocupará de mantener la economía familiar. Los aldeanos, clandestinamente, deciden violentar a las hermanas a abandonar el pueblo. Irene oye lo que planean e incendia el lugar de reunión. Antón revela el secreto sobre los aldeanos y Marta se va en busca de Juan que ha abandonado el pueblo con el resto de aquellos. El chófer, malherido, se ofrece a ayudar a Olga e Irene. Los tres se quedan solos deseando que unos nuevos habitantes llenen las casas vacías; Un perrillo, chamuscado por el fuego, se tumba a su lado.
El teatro dentro del teatro, un antiguo juego escénico. Y un tema de conocida tradición literaria: la capacidad del ser humano de ejercer el mal y el bien, sus límites, la estrecha línea que podemos transitar de uno a otro. Y al mismo tiempo una reflexión metateatral: la relación entre teatro y vida, o la capacidad del primero para mejorar la segunda, o incluso para ser más portador de dignidad y verdad. El acto de una clase de teatro en un instituto se convierte en oportunidad para establecer estrechos vínculos entre un grupo de alumnos, en su mayoría reacios, y su profesora, una soñadora de mundos mejores.
