En un futuro no muy lejano la crisis financiera que sacude a Europa obliga al Estado español a desprenderse de su patrimonio artístico. Ante la posibilidad de la venta de Las meninas, se le encarga a una afamada monja copista realizar una réplica exacta del original velazqueño. A partir de ese momento, la religiosa se va a ver atrapada en una encrucijada de intereses de diversa índole, al tiempo que va sufrir una repentina transformación de su personalidad: de humilde artesana del pincel pasará a convertirse en una inopinada estrella mediática del mundo de las artes plásticas.

La obra es un drama social que utiliza la figura mitológica de Circe y referencias intertextuales a obras como "Las mil y una noches", "Alicia en el país de las maravillas" y la poesía de Oscar Wilde para reflexionar sobre la encarcelación y la búsqueda de la libertad. La protagonista, Zulema, es una mujer que huye de su país y acaba prisionera en España, enfrentándose a un sistema judicial que la mantiene doblemente encarcelada: literal y socialmente. El diálogo entre Zulema y el juez, así como las escenas corales de las reclusas, ponen de manifiesto la falta de comunicación y las barreras sociales que impiden la reinserción y la libertad, estableciendo un paralelismo entre la mítica isla de Circe y la prisión contemporánea.
